3a World Cities

1. Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points
3a ~ World Cities
2. Contains a web link to your locations. (eg you can use the tools in your blog where you paste your work; there is a little icon that looks like a link) .25 points
3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites)connects to your study of humanities. .25 point

Comparing Seattle and San Francisco relates to our humanities study by examining the different deposits the different cities make to their residents. Feire was a believer in the "banking system". He thought that education looked at students as banks where they could deposit their information. In comparing the two cities we can examine the different types of deposits made in both cities. In Seattle one deposit may be that coffee is to be drank all throughout the day. In San Francisco one deposit may be that people have the right to choose their partner regardless of sex.

4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I think people make the assumption that it is always raining in Seattle. I think people assume that everyone from Seattle loves coffee because it is the birthplace of Starbucks. I think people stereotype residents of Seattle as being depressed due to the weather. I think people assume that the majority of San Francisco residents are homosexual. I think people assume that everyone is San Francisco is very liberal. I also think people from San Francisco are stereotyped as being environmentalists due to the progressive changes being made to make the city "greener".

b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
Seattle and San Francisco are similar because both cities are located on the west coast of the country near the ocean edge. Both cities are the most populated for their state. Also both cities are very active in political movements.

c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
Seattle and San Francisco differ in their weather patterns. Seattle is known for it's rain and San Francisco for it's fog. Also the cities differ in the kind of people they attract. Many people visit San Francisco of it's many attractions and diverse culture while many people who visit Seattle are just going to board their cruise to Alaska or venture to the Cascade mountains. Also the atmosphere of the cities are different. Seattle is a very large city but maintains a small town atmosphere. San Francisco is also a large city and it has the atmosphere of just that.

d.   Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know there are many historical places in each city. I would like to know which city kept it's heritage most intact while growing into such a populated and modern place.

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
I learned fro Sheena Dudley that baseball is part of American culture. I agree with Sheena because baseball has been around forever. Also it is used to help teach children teamwork and how to have fun. This is related to our theoretical foundation because sports are a way our teachers deposit information into students.

2c California Cuisine

  1. Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points
2c ~ California Cuisine

2.Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points

3.Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
California cuisine connects with our study of humanities by allowing us to look at the diversity of our state. California is a place with lots of  variety  when it comes to finding authentic cuisine. You can pick from Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian, Mexican, and many more. California uses a variety of locally grown produce that is less common in other states such as avocado, artichoke, dates, figs, persimmons, and sprouts. Also Californians are responsible for the sushi craze in American. Home to the "California Roll" where avocado is the main ingredient. California cuisine could be coined for the most variety when it comes to authentic international cuisines.

4. Contains the following "analytical elements":
  1. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
I choose Californian cuisine. I think of variety when I think about the cuisine from our state.  I think the subject of the work here is diversity. Californian chefs use  different types of cooking. Many people here have a heath-conscious  lifestyle meaning that fried and battered foods are less common here than other states.  Also the ingredients in Californian cuisine are more likely to be locally grown and restaurants take pride in shopping from local and/or organic farmers.

b.  Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

My choice is about diversity. California is home to many different types of people who enjoy many choices regarding the types of foods available to them. Also I think that the cuisine here helps people to understand other cultures by allowing them to understand how and why other cultures cook and eat the way they do.

c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I choose the food here in California because when I first moved here it was one of the things that opened my eyes to the international diversity of the state. In realizing the many choices of California cuisine, I have tasted many new foods and have learned about how other cultures prepare their meals.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point

I know that the American sushi craze started here in California. I would like to know what other food trends were started in California.

Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point

I learned form Jessica Holcomb that she believes in honor and duty. Also that she believes this is something overlooked by many people. I share this as common experience. I believe people are so wrapped up in their every day lives they forget about the many brave men and women who are fighting daily to protect our freedoms. I believe this is related to the history of our country because we have had many military conflicts both supported and unsupported by our great state.

2b Exploratorium

1. Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points
~2b Exploratorium

2. Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points

3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point

The Exploratorium is an interactive museum of science, art, and human perception. I think this connects to humanities in many ways. Friere believe in developing consciousness. By learning about science you are learning about the world around you. Also by many exhibits explore human perception which is a big part of studying humanities.

1 point
I choose the Exploratorium. As I walk up I can see a pond close by with people picnicking along the banks. There comes into view this huge structure with massive arches elegantly etched with what looks like angels. I later learn that is the Palace of Fine Arts. I walk towards the door and I can hear all the people laughing. As we wait in line for the tickets we can see people posing in funny pictures for one of the exhibits that await us. We enter and the place is amazing. There are two stories and exhibits everywhere. I can hear the sound of electricity  for the light bulb exhibit and rushing air from the tornado forming right in front of my eyes. There is even a new Tactile Dome where you navigate in the dark using only you sense of touch to find your way through the maze.

b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

My choice was about picking a place that was not only a museum to look and learn but also a place to play and learn by doing. Also the Exploratorium is a place not just for one or two types of people but a place that is for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding about the world we live in.

c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

I choose the Exploratorium because it is a place I have been too. I had never been to such a large or exciting museum. I was amazed by all the exhibits and could have spent days there. I was grateful for such a place for children to learn.

I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point

I learned that the Exploratorium draws in over 500,000 people each year. I would like to know in any other museums bring in such large crowds.

I learned from reading Debbie Lee that AT&T park serves not only garlic fries but sushi as well. I have been to many games there but never knew sushi was on the menu. This discovery is related to culture because it shows the diversity of the city. I don't think there are many other baseball stadiums that serve such a cuisine

2a Santa Cruz

2. Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points

3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
Santa Cruz relates to the study of humanities in many ways. Humanities is the study of human expression. Therefore Santa Cruz makes a great connection to the study by embracing the alternative lifestyles of many people. Santa Cruz welcomes all forms of human expression and is a very cultured and diverse city. Along all the streets you will find art on benches, in windows, and even on the buildings. Musicians are often found playing and singing their stories on the streets, in  cafe's, or on the beach.

4. Contains the following "analytical elements":
a. 1 point
I choose the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. This is one of my favorite sights to visit when in Santa Cruz. As I drive out of the redwood forest a what looks like small town appears. The air starts to feel light. As I drive I begin to smell the ocean.  I continue and the smell begins to get stronger and the road is looking like it's going to go on forever. Then to my left I can see the top of the Giant Dipper. I begin to hear the rollercoaster racing down the track and the people screaming. After navigating around the ocean to find parking I begin to walk towards the boardwalk. I can hear the children laughing and  smell the delicious food. As I enter through the high arches I can see the families on the beach and hear the waves crashing. I can also hear sea gulls squacking and sea lions barking.
b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
I choose the Santa Cruz Boardwalk because it's a place have fun and relax. There's nothing like enjoying a book or having a picnic  on the beach while listening to the sound of laughter or the screams excitment. The boardwalk is a place to eat good food and enjoy good company.
c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5
I choose Santa Cruz because this is a place I go to get rejuvinated. When I spend time in such ancient forests I am reminded that life is too short for all the petty dramas and to live in the now because there is no other time. The waves remind me of the intercinnectedness of everything. I'm just a crest in an ocean of waves.

I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point

I learned that the Santa Cruz Boradwalk is California's oldest surviving amusement park. I would like to know what happened to the roller coasters at the parks that closed.

I learned from Andrea Pruett that Freire mainly focused his studies on Phenomenology;the study of consciousness. I knew that Freire had studied law and philosophy but I hadn't realized that there was a whole seperate catergory created to study cosciousness. This is very related to our theoretical foundation because he was the founder and the more aware we are of the person who created the ideas the better we'll be able understand his ideas.  http://apruett27.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Assignment 1 C

The first persons blog I read was Ana Ceniceros. I learned that she has lived in California all of her life. Also I learned that she lives a good distance from campus and she is taking this class to better understand people around her and how differnent people of the workd think.Regarding Paulo Freire, I hadn't realized that there had been many schools built with emphasis on his educational theroies. Also I learned a better understanding for Paulo's "banking" system and why he beleive it could not work. I agree that dialoge involes respect and that we all must learn from eachother.
The second  persons blog I read was Chis Allen. I learned that he is taking this class to fill general education requirements and that the online format fits into his busy work schedule. I learned that by becoming the Minister of Education in Sao Paulo he was able apply his teaching to over seventy percent of Brazil's schools. I also learned that he tought at the American Universities of Cambridge and Havard. I was reminded that Paulo Freire was a man who thought of education has helping people make more educated choices that would improve the quality of their lives.
By looking at our education from Paulo's perspective it will help us in our humanities study by allowing us to open our minds to look at things from outside box, so to say. This perspective I hope will challenge me to look at things in my world as a learning experience rather than place that is  passing me by or where I just keep dancing to the tune being played by others.

Assignment 1b

Paulo Friere was born in Brazil in 1921. He inspired many people to re-think the educational system of his time. He belived in dialoge, the mutual respect between teacher and learner. Where the teacher learns and the learner teaches and vice versa. He thought this  was the best way to educate a critical mass of people who are seeking change in their world. This  challenged the "banking" system in which students were force fed deposits from their teachers. Paulo gained fame by his impressive results of teaching 300 sugar cane workers to read and write in just 45 days.

Paulo Freire's educational theories took the word education to a new level. His work is world famous for weaving education and liberation. Paulo beleived in coscientization-developing consciousness, but consciousness that is understood to have the power to transform reality' (Taylor 1993: 52). I think this is the idea that expands the meaning of education. The current idea of teaching a curricula doesn't allow for teachers roaming off topic to teach students real life skills. Paulo thought  teaching through dialoge could help to change the world by teaching peolple the actual reality of the world in due perpective and thereby transcend that reality.

Paulo Freire's most famous book was, Pedogogy of the Oppressed. Paulo had a special intrest in teaching education to those who where suffering the most, the poor. He beleived education was not about numbers and letters but about changing the world. He realized the the majority of the people in this world where the ones with little money and the ones making the curricula where the ones with the money.  This was a hard task to tackle in an even harder time in histroy but he did his best to create power through knowledge. Not only did he make it his life mission to create change through proper educationbut I beleive he was successful. I beleive Paulo Freire was a great man responsible for an awakening of the masses to the reality of this world.

Assignment 1a

1. What is your first name only
Rachael

2. Why are you taking this class and what do you hope to learn.
I am taking this class to further my awareness of human expression. I hope to learn better ways to express myself. I also hope to learn ways that my clients can express themselves. I am also excited to learn how the forms of expression have changed throughout history.

3. How far do you live from SRJC main campus?
8.8 miles

4. What do you think of when you think "California"? Does this differ from what non-Californians think and if so, how?
When I think of California I think of a cultured, free-thinking, and wealthy state. I think of a place where many different kinds of people can come together to make big differences. I think of a green Eco-friendly place where almost everyone does there part to keep California beautiful .
Growing up in Ohio when I would think of California I thought of freedom. Freedom to be who you are. Freedom from conformity, racism, and economic troubles. I thought of the beautiful scenery such as the beaches, the mountains, and the redwoods forests. Although many people that I knew from Ohio, did not think of California this way. My father for example thinks that California is just a place for yuppie liberals and gays. He thinks that California is too expensive and that everyone there is a hippie or a Hollywood star.
I believe the main difference between the way that people think of California is that when non- Californians think of Califorinia they think of flamboyant lifestyles, money, and fame. When Californians think of California they think of the progressive thinking and the culture.

5. Have you created a blog or webpage in the past?
Kinda, this is different than myspace though.
